WAIAPU’S NICE LEAD

WELLINGTON COLTS’ VISIT REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET (Special lo Mm Herald.) WAIPIRO BAY, Ibis day. The Waiapu ropiesentativo cricketers, who beat Poverty Bay in convincing style recently, in the elimination mate'll to decide which should have the right to challenge for the Hawke Cup, carried on in good style in their first innings against the team of Wellington colts led by Mr. Arthur Doneghuc, in the match which started yesterday and continued to-day. At the close of the first innings the Waiapu side had a lead of 101, and at the luncheon adjournment to-day the visitors had lost six wickets for 160 in their second strike. The indications were that the homo team would add another victory to that registered in the. game with Poverty Bay. The Wellington colts batted first, and Jost the first three wickets quickly, but VViren and Brown got set, and made a good stand lor the fourth wicket, while Bawton, and later Griffiths, also helped the score along well. Fortune was another good bat for the visiting team, and the extras accounted for 10 runs in the total of 190. Gilmore took three of the Wellington "wickets for 32 runs, and W. Oates three for 41, while Trevethick, Spence, Bennett, and W. Oates each took a wicket. A strong opening was made by Waiapu, Bennett and G. Mill opening with a partnership that carried the score well towards the century, before they were parted. Bennett s 68 was in\ aluable to the home team, and he gave the visiting fieldsmen enough leather-chasing to make them feel the warmth of the day. Mill made 34 before he was dismissed, and later W. Oates made 38, while J. Oates’ 42 and Pera Hati s 20 were achieved in good style and without undue waste of time. The stumps weie drawn for the day when Trevethick and Sam Mill were together, holding up the tenth wicket, and when they resumed this jnoping, it was not long before Doneghuc, who already had foui wickets to his credit, managed to separate them. At lunch-time to-day, the Welington players had 130 on the score-hook for iho loss of six wickets, ns stated above. Details
