When the lTunket Shield match was resumed the weather was line and warm. Kerr, 31, and Hamilton, 17, resumed Canterbury’s second innings. Clcverley and Wensley, the Auckland coach, bandied the attack. Though cautious, the batsmen started scoring right away, Kerr finding the ’boundary past point off Wensley, and again in the next over with a- powerful cover drive. Seventy went up a good time. Kerr brought 80 up, and took his own score to the halfcentury with two boundaries in succession off Cleverley. He hil two more fine fours in the same over, scoring 16 off five halls. Matheson look over from Cleverley,, and Kerr got a single. Against Wensley he hit Lis seventh boundary of the morning. The century came up with a single to Hamilton after the innings had lasted minutes. Then the scoring slowed down. Allcotl relieved Wensley. who had howled well. The batsmen were up against steady howling and line fielding. McCoy took over from Matheson, and the change proved effective. In playing the slow howler Kcit hit his own slumps. He halted well for 73. and the total was 112.
Roberts joined Hamilton. The scoring slowed up considerably against the. bowling of McCoy and Allcotl. Ihc latter bowled five maidens in surtcession. After a. slow spell both batsmen scored off McCoy, and Cleverley was brought 011. By lunch Hamilton and Roberts had brought the total to 117. Hamilton and Roberts were slill batling at 21.30 pt. 111.. when they had brought, the score lo 201. Wlioit (he second strike of the Wellington team was completed this afternoon, at about 3 o’clock, the Waiapu side wanted only 96 runs to win. In their first innings, the Wellington colts made 190, and Waiapu replied with 291; Wellington’s second effort yielded 196, including Fortune’s 31, Griffiths’ 22, Lawton’s 41, Ward’s 31, and Wiren’s 19.
The most successful of the Waiapu bowlers were J. Moody and W. Oates, who took four wickets for 23, and three for 31 respectively. The weather continued hot and sultry, and the wicket was showing signs of breaking up. Nevertheless, the spectators wore confident that the. home team would have 110 difficulty in winning with a few wickets in hand. To-morrow the Wellington colts leave Waipiro Bay for Gisborne, where they are to play Poverty Bay during the new year.
