Hobble Skirts Again
AFTER the long skirts, boned corsets, and other atrocities of a completely impractical fashion season women are threatened with a new horror —A return to the hobble skirt. At several London dress shows lately attempts have been made to
insinuate frocks with, very .narrow hems into feminine favor. A manne-
quin enters the salon swaying gracefully, but taking obviously shorter steps. On close investigation the women spectators discover that the dress is so tight at the hemline that the mannequin can scarcely walk. One.says! “upon investigation” advisedly, because the fact that the skirt is of the “hobble” variety is carefully disguised by super-imposed panels of pleats, which, swaying out; as the mannequin walks, create the illusion of a full skirt. Sometimes fringe is used for the same purpose. Actually the majority of the newest frocks hnvo hems that are scarcely more than a yard wide at the edge. Even tweed suits have narrow skirts.
