Fragmentary dispatches say that the entire town of La Poma. has been, desi roved.

Thirty-eight bodies were recovered from the debris of the ruined town. The earthquake shook the northern Argentine. Undulatory shocks moved from east, to west. Great crevices appeared in the majority of the buildings, which collapsed. The survivors labored beneath tottering walls and alongside lmlffnllen structures, seeking the bodies of relatives. Most of the population of 3000 must live in tents for several weeks. Military forces have been sent to take charge of the rescue work and render first aid.

Only two policemen were on duty when the ’quake occurred, and the population was thrown into the utmost confusion.

Heavy rains accompanied by an electrical storm broke over the ruins, and hindered the search for the dead and injured, sinrl imposed great; difficulties upon rescue parties seeking the reach the stricken area.
