NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS (Per Press Association.) ROTORUA, last night. The New Zealand chess championship, the 40th congress, commenced to-day. The competitors, are Grierson, Maddox (Auckland), Pleasants (Wanganui), Gyles, Kelling, Fairburn (Wellington), Rummer (Wairarapa), Severne (Nelson), Miller (Westport), Herbert (Dunedin), Elrskine (Invercargill), Greenfield (N.S.W). ' The first round resulted: Erskine boat Miller; Severne beat Greenfield; Gyles beat Pleasants; 'Fairburn beat Herbert: Maddox drew, with Kummcr; Gicrson v. Kelling. unfinished. Erskine v. filler. —The English game, was adopted by Erskine. and developed into a Queen’s Pawn game. Miller playing rather rapidly, essayed an attack which Erskine replaced by timely exchanges in the early and middle game.
