TENNIS IN GISBORNE

ASSOCIATION TOURNEY PROGRESS MAINTAINED Good progress was mainlninod in the Poverty Bay and East: Coast Lawn Tennis Association’s tournament today, and there seemed every likelihood this afternoon that the tournament would be completed, or at least brought to the semi-final stages, within the period of three days allowed by the association. Last year’s fixture dragged out over a full week, and thjs was recognised as unfair to visiting players, who had other playing engagements and holiday fixtures to consider. Hence the decision of the executive to dispose of the various sections in the space of three days this year, and the use of the courts of two clubs for the respective divisions of the tournament.

In the men’s section, it appeared likely that Watson and Bull would renew their rivalry in the championship singles, as each had gone through the early rounds without strain, and reached the fourth round full of play. Watson was showing an erratic streak in his handicap games, but the championship sections called out his full strength, and his biggest hurdle prior to tho finai seemed to be Q. H. Seddon, the tireless Phar Lap of the courts, whose condition has enabled him to wear down many a faster and more brilliant opponent. This pair was due to meet this afternoon, and much interest, centred in their engagement. Bull and Dawson Chrisp Tooked like the hardest doubles combination in the championship hist , and Watson and Miss Barns-Cirnliam are among the most formidable of the mixed doubles pairs; while of the ladies’ pairs, Miss Barns-Graham and Miss Ilegarty have been showinggood match form. Of the ladies in the singles championship, Miss .P. Hopkinson seems most likely to withstand the heavy strain of tho tournament, with its multiplicity of matches in the various sections. CHAMPIONSHIPS HEAT AFFECTS PLAYERS fl’nr Press Association.l CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Tn the tennis championships to-day, ,o surprising match in the ladies’ singles w r ns 'between Miss Nicholls, the present champion, and Mrs Thomson, formerly Miss Tracy. The in-

tense heat affected the players, and long, closely-contested rallies added to their discomfiture. Neither ventured to the net often. ' Mrs. Thomson won the first set, (i—Miss Nicholls rallied in the second set', and led s—-0. Mrs Thomson sco'red tide next four games, and at this stage Miss Nicholls collapsed through the heat. After a spell she returned, but her driving had lost its sting. Mrs. Thomson won the set 7—5, and the match. The winner played a steady, patient game. In the men’s singles, Noel Wilson was troubled for a time by W. R. Robinson, of Canterbury, a former ’varsity champion, and the match went to four sets, marked by terrific driving and remarkable recoveries. The serving at times was beautiful, and at others erratic. Each won a service ganie with four aces in succession. Wilson was clipping the side lines in the last set on both wing's, and his form was 100 per cent, better than yesterday’s. Additional results were: — MEN’S SJNGI/EK Third round: N. It. Wilson beat W. Robinson, .I—7, o—!i, <i—h, o—.'l. LAMES’ SINGLES Second round: Mrs. Adams boat Miss N. M. Fleming, ti—k, 0—If; 'Miss M.
