LOTTERY SENSATION
ERROR IN DRAWING EXCITEMENT RIVALS REVOLT LONDON, Dec. 22. The Times’ Madrid correspondent reports that the excitement caused by the drawing of “El Gordo” or “The Fat One” as the greatest lottery in Spain is called, rivalled last week's revolt. After a child from an orphanage called out a number, a second child, instead of announcing the corresponding second prize of (i,000,000 pesetas marked on the ball lie was holding, called out “10,000 pesetas.” The error was not noticed by the authorities until the draw was almost completed, whereupon the spectators became greatly excited, demanding that the drawing should be annulled, which the authorities refused to do. Two series of 35,000 tickets were sold, for which there avcto two first prizes of £333,000 each, a second of £120,000, a third of £(>0,000, and also 5800. smaller prizes. The first prize went 1o Valencia, the second was divided between Madrid and Valencia, and the third went to Barcelona. All the prizes were divided by syndicates, as the price of the tickets was £44. It is reported that Commandant Franco holds a share in the fourth prize.
