ISLAND NEWS

MISSION SHIP RETURNS (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. The Melanesian mission steamer Southern Cross returned to Auckland yesterday after a three months' cruise to the Solomon Islands and New Hebrides Islands. About SCO children are believed to have died as a result of a serious epidemic of whooping cough in the Solomon group. The epidemic broke out before the arrival of the Southern Cross, and was abating when the vessel left the group.

There has been an exceptionally dry spring in the Solomon and New Hebrides groups, where the rainfall is normally very heavy. The dry spell had not broken when the Southern Cross left Villa and it was feared that there would bo a shortage of food for the natives.
