Having spent 95 years of her life in unbroken residence in New Zealand, Mrs. Mary Ann Adamson, of Hastings, celebrated her ninety-seventh birthday last Thursday. Mr. E. W. Armstrong, the architect for tlm new Art Gallery being erected in the Hotanic Gardens, Christchurch, intends leaving shortly on his return to England. G. A. Troup, and requested him to reconsider his decision not to stand again for the Mayoralty. Mr. Troup replied that he would give the matter the tallest consideration, but could not be hopeful of an affirmative reply unless his health improved. Mr. A. It. Hittchmgs, of Wellington, has received advice that at the recent examination held bv the Australian Institute of Secretaries, he was successful in obtaining the highest marks for Australia and New Zealand, and has been ■ awarded the gold medal of the institute. Mr. Hutchings is a member of the I accountants’ branch of the Department of Health, Wellington. Another New Zealander, Mr. W. U. Mathieson, of i Wellington, obtained second place. I JI..M.S. Diomede, which has just left ■Jamaica on her return to New Zealand alter being absent for a year refitting, brings with her two distinguished naval officers “on loan” to the Dominion Government. These are Captain M. .1. de Meric, M.V.0., and Commander V. A. C. Orutchley. V.C., D. 5.0., a hero ot Ostotnl. Captain de Meric was promoted at, the New Year, and the Diomede is his first command at his present _rank. Me was made a commander in 1923 and tils ship was 11..M.5. Versatile in the Atlantic fleet. From 1921 to 1924 he : served in the Loyal yacht. Commander Crntrhley gained both the V.C. and | i.S.O. for his part in the raid made by the Vindictive on Ostend on May 9 and 10. 1918. This attempt followed the failure of the raid previously made, which had been carried out at the same time as the operations at. Zebrugge. The Vindictive, with Commander Godsall in charge, van in under heavy lire and sighted the harbor. The captain was killed, hut Lieutenant Victor Crulehley was just able to make the entrance to (lie canal when the ship grounded and sank. The crew were saved by two motor launches. whose commanders showed great gallantry.
