Northern Territory Life
ANLY one who has visited the Northern Territory and other outback parts of Australia ean realiso the hardships endured so bravely by tho women, whose very faces bear ample signs of tho trying life they lead. Home for many consists of a dwelling with walls of sacking, a roof of iron, the earth f6r a floor, and partitions of calico.
The author of “Far North Memories,” Mrs J. S. Litchfield, had a breakdown in health and accepted an invitation to stay with a friend who was married to a diamond driller m the Northern Territory. Mrs Litchfield’s first home was at West Arm, across the harbor from Darwin. Later her host was stationed at Anson Bay, on the Daly River. Despite the isolation, life was pleasant. There was the inevitable remittance man, but tho other members of the tiny community were friendly and sociable. Whilo there was frequently a shortage of “civilised” food, game was plentiful, and they fared sumptuously on quails and marsupials and other dainties of the wild; Later ’the household removed to a deserted mining-field on the north-south line. Here a monotonous diet of canned beef replaced these succulent delicacies.-
