PRODUCE MARKETS
INTEREST REVIVED THIS SEASON’S SOWINGS (Pur Proas Association.! CHRISTCHURCH, this (Jay. Some interest lias been aroused on tho local grain and produce markets as a result, of the publication of the official statistics in regard to the areas sown in cereals and potatoes this year. It had been expected since last autumn that there would he an increased area sown in wheat as a result- of the drop in meat and wool prices, but the actual increase is hot so large as was anticipated. This is accounted for probably by" the: wet. spring, which made it impossible for some growers fo get in as much wheat as they had intended 1 . There is a. substantial increase in the area sown in oats this year. The area last year was 282,814 acres, and this year it is 322,000 acres. More oats weto sown Than was at first intended because the wet spring stopped wheat sowing to a certain extent. The figures in regard to potatoes show an increase of nearly 700 acres as compared with last year—23,3l4 acres, last., year and 24,000 afcres this year. No business is being done at the present time, and consequently only nominal quotations can be given.
