BIG IRISH SWEEPS
ATTRACT MONEY FROM BRITAIN/ LONDON, Oct. 22. The Daily Express understands that the Government is considering a curious situation arising from the popularity of large sweeps conducted in Ireland with the sanction arid supervision of the Free State Government. The prize-money in a sweep on the Manchester November Handicap is expected to total £IOO.OOO, of which only 20 per cent, was subscribed in Ireland and the remainder in Britain. A series of similar sweeps is being planned on tho Grand National, Derby, and St. Leger, in which the prize money is conservatively estimated to, exceed £500,000. “The Government cannot complacently view thousands of pounds going to Ireland,” says the Daily Express which adds that the Ministry is considering whether to make the dispatch of money to Ireland for sweep tickets illegal, or to legalise a limited number of sweeps in Britain for specific charitable purposes, such as assisting the hard-pressed hospitals.
