CEREALS AND POTATOES
THE COMING HARVEST AN INCREASING ACREAGE (Special to the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this day. Results of a postal census taken by the Government Statistician from cereal and potato growers show that compared with the, actual acreage sown last season the estimates of sowings of cereals this season all show increases, details Jieing as fallows: Estimated areas, 1930-31, wheat, North Island, 3700 acres; South Island, 239,300 acres; total, 243,000 acres; increase, 4347 acres. Tim distribution of wheat production is as follows: North Island, 3602 acres; Nelson - Marlborough - Westland, 5555 acres; Canterbury, 190.488 acres; Otago and Southland, 34,299 acres. Oats. North Island, 16,500 acres; South Island, 305,500 acres; total, 322.000 acres; increase, 39,186 acres. Sowings in Nelson, Marlborough and Westland arc estimated at 11,811 acres; Canterbury 50,948 acres; Otago and Southland, 6500 acres. Harley sowings are returned as follows: North Island, 1900 acres; South Island, 23.350 acres; total, 25,250 acres; increase, 6619 acres.
Potato plantings for the season, with last year’s planting in parentheses, are returned as follows: North Island, 4400 acres (4905) ; South Island, 19,600 (18,309); total, 24.000 (23,214). The Government Statistician adds that on the average of the last five seasons of 5 56 tons per acre, the total vield from the estimated area shown for 1930-31 should approximate 133,500 tons, against 130,107 to”s last season.
