LAMBING LITTLE WORSE
GISBORNE PERCENTAGES WAIAPU FIGURES IMPROVE Speaking generally, lambing percentages in the 'Gisborne district are little woi'se than last year, despite the losses caused through unseasonable conditions during the height of the lambing season on some stations. Some of the farmers suffered severely, with one percentage as low as 51, but in other more favored areas the figures were up to the level of last year. Judging from inquiries made among representative farmers in the five counties comprising what is usually termed the Gisborne district, it is believed that the Cook and Uawa counties’ lambing percentages will be about the same as last year, with a slight drop at Matakaoa. The county most seriously affected appears to be Waikohu, where the percentages appear to have dropped by about per cent. The only county which appears to have shown an increase is Waiapu, where the figures are a slight improvement on those of last year, so far as can be estimated.
If an average were taken over the five counties, it is believed that the percentage would be in the vicinity of 76, whereas last year it was about 80. This reduction is very small compared with estimates made during the height of the severe storms at lambing time. Estimates made of the average lambing percentages in the district this year, compared with last year, are given below:
Countv — 1929 1930 Cook 85 85 Waikohu 85 68 Uawa ... - ... 80 80 Waiapu 78 80 Mutakaoa "72 70 District ... 80 76
