LIABILITY OF EMPLOYERS (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. When an Auckland press message with reference to the, liability of employers under the Unemployment Act was shown tp the Hoii. S. G. Smith, Minister of Labor, to-day, his comment waS brief: “It is pathetic to think alter all the explanations given by the press, in addition to the reports of the lengthy discussions in Parliament, leading business men should come along and make such discoveries as this.’’
SELECTION OF MEMBERS (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day.. In reply to a letter from the Otago district council Of the .AlliafiCfe oil Labor in reference to a protest against the Minister’s determination to SelOfct the workers’ representative oil the l iiemployrngiit Board, the Minister of Labor, the’Hob. S. G. Smith, wrote: “In view of the tone of the letter and the .unfair imputations it 'jontaiiis ajgaiiist (he Government anil myself. 1 do not propose to take any action other than to advise you that the communication reached ihe bv mail, arriving on the Ist ihsl.”
Commenting on the reply, Mr. J. llohiiison, secretary U> the district council, said the Government was Staging a sham, mitt doubtless the Minister felt peeved that his intention to have the party whip represent the workers had been dearly discerned. The Labor Party could not be blamed l for doubting the Minister’s sincerity if he thought lie should select his opponent’s representatives.
