OBITUARY
REV. GEO. BROWN, M.A. The death of the Rev. George Brown, M.A., of Onehunga, in his hundredth year, has severed the last remaining link with tho earliest days of the Presbyterian Church in Auckland, and indeed in New Zealand. The late Mr. Brown, who would have reached his hundredth birthday on November 11, passed away peacefully on Monday at his residence in Onehunga'. Born near Aberdeen in 1830, when William IV was King, Mr. Brown graduated master of arts in Aberdeen Lniversity, and was licensed to preach by the presbytery of Aberdeen in 1857. He arrived in Auckland by the ship Jura on January 15, 1860, being then 30 years of age, and was tho first Presbyterian minister to be ordained in Auckland, the ceremony being conducted in St. Andrew’s Church by the Rev. Dr. Bruce and Mr. J. Mucky in April, 1860. Until October, 1860, Air. Brown conducted services at Onehunga, Hobson street, and Avondale, and was then given the choice of permanent charge of Hobson street (now St. James’), or Onehunga. Later be was given the circuit from Devonport to Wade, in addition to his Onehunga charge. Mr. Brown is survived by two sons, Messrs. David and John Brown, and one daughter, Miss Hannah Brown
A veteran of the Indian Mutiny, Mr. George Taylor, died: in Auckland on October 30, aged 90 years. He was born in Holloway, London, and enlisted in tho 33rd Foot Regiment for service during the Indian Mutiny. He left London at the age of 17 years and six months, and after a short period of training in Ireland went to India in the H.M.S. Earl of Balcaross, and landed at Bombay on October 15, 1858, after a four months’ trip. Ho served in India for 10 years, and was then discharged at Calcutta and sailed to Alelbourne on a French ship, arriving in Australia in May, 1868. Ten clays later he went to Wellington by the Gottenburg. His father and mother, with five boys and four girls, came out on the Lancashire Witch, arriving at Auckland in 1865. Air. Taylor joined them at Whangarei, and later he went to the Thames goldfield, where he kept a store.
