NORTH-WEST FRONTIER AFRIDIS STUBBORN CALCUTTA, October 20. Another honest effort at peace between the British and the Afridis has come to naught, and Peshawar, the key city to the north-western frontier, is again in danger. The Government lias been loft with no alternative but to proceed with a strong oeeiisive against; the Afridis to end the menace for all time. Military experts deemed it expedient. after the recent serious raid on the frontier, to carry out a. big military expedition to end the Afridj. menace, but the Government demurred about the expense, and. asked tho Afridi leaders to meet the British representatives, in au effort to come to a settlement. This conference ended to-day with the Afridis stubborn, leaving tho Government no alternative but to proceed with the offensive.
