LONG LINE OF CHIEFS

HENI MATAROA’S DESCENT BACK TO 14th CENTURY A Jong line of, chiefs and chieftainesses figure in the ancestry of Lady Carroll, for whose obsequies the tribes of Ppverty Bay and the East Coast, and Wairoa, with additions from many other parts of the North Island are now gathering in Gisborne. The lineage of the deceased lady goes back to the lith century, and by the records of the race, so hnarvellously preserved by word of mouth, can be traced to the earliest of the chiefs thatmuled the in this portion of New Zealand. From Riwu, for whom Turanga-o-Kiwa (now Gisborne) was infilled, many generations ago, on the one side, and from Paoa (or .Pawn) on the other, the late Lady Carroll was descended in direct line, her claims to this descent having been officially recognised by the courts,.with the tacit consent of her compatriots. Iviwa and Paoa were contemporary chiefs who lived in this district, and whose :son and daughter respectively married, their issue including liana, the founder of the. branch of the race whose modern product was Heni Matejoil. Down through the generations the li|to was kept distinct, arid in the list of ancestors boasted by the late Lady Carroll apimared name s that have been among the most illustrious of their respective .times. The gen ecology of .Lady Carroll, or gs it is known in the Maori tongue, the whakapapa, is best followed when set out as in the native practice, with the heads of the two contemporary chiefs together, their respective issues, and thereafter the representative of the direct jiiie on the left-.hand, aud his or her spouse upon the right. The whakapapl is as under:— KIWA PAOA Kahutuanui' Hineakua Haua IMT „ -Wairaka Anui-ki-taharaiigi Rangitgukiwaho Ngoro ' Bakaiakoko Ue, Taraitvhana Tahungaehonui Hiharorc Bu.atepupnkc Tuwairua Khapani Wairau . , Biiarauhanga Kahungungunu Euaroa Rahirimomore Kahunokc Kahukirokiro Taniateakuku Hiuetera Tutekohi lline tc.
