FANCY DRESS BALL

GARRISON HALL FUNCTION HAPPY GISBORNE SCHOLARS Tlio Gisborne Central .School’s ball, held in the Garrison Hall last night, was an outstanding success, chiefly due to the enormous amount of work jiiit into its preparation- by the teachers and a committee of parents and friends convened by Mrs. F. It. Ball. Tin* scene during the grand march was brilliant; several hundred children in fancy costumes of varied design and vivid colors made a georgeous tacle.Great originality went to the arrangement of the dance programme, and the children simply revelled in the quaint old English dances such as “Old Rodger is Dead,’’ “Captain Jinks,” “Cochin -China,” and “Jenny Jones,” besides providing the onlookers wiih a bright and pleasing entertainment. The supper rooms were beautifully decorated with interlaced blue streamers, from which swung gay balloons, and the tables, daintily decorated with gold chrysanthemums, were loaded with “goodies” of all kinds. '. : Mr. C. G. Rigby acted as controller of the dances, assisted by Mr. 11. G. Lancaster, and the charming behavior of tier children reflected the greatest possible credit, on their teachers.. Mrs., lleenov’s orchestra played to perfection the quaint melodies demanded by the programme. The attendance at the dance was much larger than last year, but owing to smooth working the crowd supped in comfort. The greatest credit is due to Mr. 0. W. Muir, the late chairman of the committee, whose endeavors to ensure the success of the ball were greatly appreciated by the staff and committee.
