OBITUARY

ME. HENEY H. WALL ANOTHER PIONEER PASSES Another of the district’s' pioneers passed away yesterday in the person of Mr. Henry Hoyle Wall, a well-known and successful farmer who had spent almost his entire life in New Zealand and had been resident in Poverty Bay since 1883. Mr. Wall was born in Stroud, G Unicestershire, England, in 1851, and w u*n only a year old was brought to New Zealand, his parents landing at- Blenheim in 1852. He was brought up in that district, and educated there, gaining a good grounding in the principles ot taim management, which he applied wit i much success later when he took U P land on his own account in Hawke s Bay. His holding there increased greatly in value owing to his management, and while still a -comparatively young man he was ablo to spare time from his station to take part in local politics, being a member of the Napier Borough Council for several years and 'being chosen as acting-Mayor on one occasion during the absence of the incumbent. Lodge affiliations were accumulated by Mr. Wall during his residence in Hawke’s Bay, and lie was one of Hie foundation members of the Victoria Lodge, E.C., and also rose in the Scindc Lodge to the rank of Worshipful Master, in 1881. His removal to Poverty [Bay eventuated whelk he purchased a sheepstation at Waerenga-o-kuri, to which m succeeding years he applied with great suacess his knowledge of farming practice. Other properties came under his cohtvol, and before his retirement lie had owned four other stations beside that to which he first removed from Hawke’s Bay. The war period found Mr. Wall and his wife in Britain, where they visited their daughter, Mrs. P. S. Barton, of Norfolk, England; and for the duration of hostilities Mr. Wall gave his services to the entertainment of soldiers on leave in London, acting as a guide in connection with the well-known Shakespeare Hut, Later he and Mrs. Wall returned to New Zealand, and settled in Gisborne, but though-retired, Mr. Wall did not entirely relinquish his interest in his farm properties, the actual management of which was taken over by Mr. Arthur Wall, his surviving son. Aa elder son, Mr. Ernest Leonard Wall, died some 30 years ago, and Mrs. Wall, sen., passed away last February, so that the surviving members of the family, -comprise only Mrs. Barton and Mr. Arthur Wall. The late Mr. H. H. Wall continued his interest in politics, both local and national, until comparatively recent years, and on one occasion accepted nomination for Parliamentary’ honors, his opponents being Sir James Carroll and Mr. W. Lissant Clayton, Sir James being the successful -candidate for what was then the Waiapu electorate. The funeral took place this afternoon. EARL OF MORAY (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.)
