Ragwort on Crown Lands.
| Assurance that the Government I Lands and Survey Department was fully alive to the seriousness of the ■ ragwort menace and that it was taking steps towards the eradication of the weed on Crown lands was given by the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Mr. K. M. Graham, to a Waikato Times reporter. In cases of Grown ownership under the discharged sold- | ier settlement scheme, in which the department had power to advance j money under the provisions of the Act, I settlers had been advised, where their land was badly infested with the weed, to sell or otherwise reduce their herds and stock up with sheep. This had been done in cases and had met with marked success. When the weed had been eradicated, the settler was able to rebuild his herd and with , the aid of a few sheep keep the rag- i wort under control. The erection of I adequate fencing was necessary in : running sheep in large numbers, and for this the department advanced the j necessary financial assistance.
