Mr. EL Thomas, of Sydney, \yi 11 judge the elocution section of Ihe Wellington Competitions in August. The Prince of Wales landed safely at. Cairo after his flight of 1000 miles, and the accompanying 'planes alighted perfectly at regular intervals. On Ap"il 24 the Dominion president of (lie New Zealand Parmors' Union, Mr. W. .1. Poison, XL?., will leave for the South Island, where he intends to deliver a number of addresses on questions of the day, particularly those relating to the farming industry. Mr. Poison's tour will occupy approximately three weeks.

The Wellington Education Board was called upon this week to nominate men)hers to the council of education. lie retiring members were. T. U. \\ e.lljj and -Mr. J. R, Kirk. As Mr. Kirk did not see.lc re-election. Mr. J. A. Valentino was nominated to the position with Mr. Wells. Mr. Valentine was trained as a teacher in Otago and attended the Dunedin Training College and Otago University, where he obtained his degree, bor 34'years he has been actively engaged in teaching in Mew Zealand. In 1913 he, was appointed secretary and assistant inspector to the South Canterbury Board until it was absorbed by the. Canterbury Hoard. lie then became inspector 01 schools under the Lduealion Departrrient, serving in the Grey, Wesfland and Canterbury areas, when he was appointed senior inspector in Tarauaki, which position he held until his retirement in 1926. Later he was chosen to visit the Cook- Islands to report on Hie education system of that group and to suggest how improvements might be effected, lie was also employed at different times as a temporary 'senior officer in the Department, at Wellington. Li W2B he visited the British Isles and was able to observe the methods followed in various schools, especially in London and Birminuham, technical schools, and schools for physically defective children. He also gained information concerning Hie work of new types of schools, including those provided for what are known as "11 plus pnpils." Tie is at present a member of the Tarnnaki Education Board.
