HAREM SECRETS
SULTAN'S PALACE OPENED NOTORIOUS PLACE OF INTRIGUE CONSTANTINOPLE, April 7. For tho first time, the public have been permitted to inspect tho interior of the former Imperial harem. for 400 years, since the Turks captured Constantinople, it had been the scenes of innumerable intrigues, murders, debauches, and assassinations, and 20 Sultans, preceding the notorious Abdul llamid, were associated with it. Naturally it is attracting considerable attention.
The harem, the private suite of the Sultans and their odalisques (female slaves), in tho celebrated Palace of Topkapod, has revealed much of artistic interest, notably the deep mauve porcelain lining of the sleeping chambers, tho numbers of immense beds, surmounted by gilded canopies in Venetian style, the white marble fountains, large oil paintings, brocaded furniture, and valuable carpets.
