SCIENCE SPANS 40,000,000 YEARS
NKWIIAYEN. April 7. Professor George Wielaud. of Yale University, announces the discovery ot the largest, and probably the oldest of petrified hardwood forests, in the San Juan basin in New Mexi/n. The collection contains palineltoes. fern roots, and the bones of turtles ami dinosaurs. These fossils, which are in extraordinary variety, indicate their appearance on "the landscape 40.000,000 years ago. according to the University's reckoning.
London. April 16: Arrived, at London, llerniiuius; at- San Francisco. Marama. Sailed, for New Zealand, Coptic, from London; Malaroa, from Balboa. Sergeant Culloty. formerly of Auckland, arrived in (lishorne last night, and this morning took up his ditties as sergeant, in the, Gisborne l'oliee Force, in place, of Sergeant Mclntyre, who is now stationed til Tokoniaru Ray. A good deal of activity was noticed in town today, and most- business premises were busy with their Raster trade. A great number of shoppers were, country folk, and it is believed that the payment of the. huttorfat cheques before Easter by the Kia Ora Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., helped materially in bringing many shoppers to town.
