YOUTHFUL CRIMINAL JUDGE'S STRICTURES lP«r Pi-pss Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. When prisoners were being sentenced in the Supreme Court to-day, the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, said: "Would you please inform the authorities of the very strong recommendation of this court that these men be kept in separate institutions. If they cannot be separated in a Borstal institution, there are means of keeping them apart, as that .should undoubtedly be done." The Chief Justice was disposing of the case o" Douglas John Rodney Thorburn, who had pleaded guilty to eight charges of breaking? entering and the f t; and Hector McDowall and Norman Henry Blnir Ross, who had admitted nine and 13 • charges of breaking, entering and theft respectively. Mr. W. E. Leicester, who appeared-for the three prisoners, said that there were other charges of converting motor cars which had not yet been dealt with by the Magistrate's Court. The relatives of the prisoners desired that something be done for their future. Thornbnrn had been in trouble in 1928 for the conversion of a motor car, but the other prisoners had not been before the court previously. The three prisoners had been deprived of home influence in their formative yors. One was married and all were under 21 years of age. All were industrious. "Your counsel has said yon are industrious." said His Honor, in addressing the prisoners. "Unfortunately there is too much evidence of it before me. Your industrv has been in the wren? direction." One of the prisoners had been found with gelignite and a fuse in his possession. He ordered tbn< they he detained in a Borstal institution f::;three vears.
