V.R.C. AUTUMN CARNIVAL

SATISFACTORY ENTRIES MELBOURNE, Feb. 5. General entries closed to-day for the V.RcC. Autumn meeting that will begin on Saturday, March 1." Although the number of horses nominated is fewer than last year, the entries are quite satisfactory, being in excess of those for 1926 and 1927. and the same as those lor 1928. Notwithstanding the fallingolf the meeting promises to compare favorably with (hose of recent years, as the quality of the horses engaged is well up to tiie average, except in races over a distance. Good stayers are scarce, and most racing men will agree that this is due go too much encouragement being given to the breeding of j “speedy squibs.” There are some interesting entries from other States, in addition those from Sydney, i Entries from. Adelaide include that great sprinter Merab, the leading two-year-old Comic Song, Kidaides, and Some Quality. , There is every reason for theV’.A.T.O. to be satisfied with the entries received to-day for the general events to be run at the autumn meeting at Caulfield on February 15 and 22. The entries aggregated 356, an increase of only three on, last year, and only eight fewer than the record year, 1925. There are substantial increases in the events for two-year-olds, hut so far as stayers and middle-distance performers are concerned there is a fall-ing-off.

The Lord Quex gelding, Auda, which arrived from New Zealand recently, says the Sydney Sun, cost H. R. Telford 600 guineas. Enriched by l’har Lap s earnings, Telford has spent a substantial sum in the purchase of bloodstock, and as if is to New Zealand that he owes his possession o# the dual Derby winner, it was only natural that he should patronise that country again in his search for another good horse. He expended 1100 guineas on three yearlings, and also purchased Polyxena and (Viiiquo.
