Increases in the' number of passengers carried and the revenue earned by the railways during the Christmas and New r ear periods are recorded in the returns now in tile possession' of the Miuistet of Railways, the Hon. W. R. Taverner. “There is no doubt, stn-tes the Minister “that the many now facilities for travel that are now available, such as the night expresses in the South Island, and the Daylight Limited in the North, and additional arid improved car j .accommodation such as .that provided with the lounge cars m the North Island, are helping to promote new traffic for tho railways. The results achieved during tho holiday period justify an optimistic feeling, and certainly warrant the continuance of the progressive policy which wo have adopted for the purpose of stimulating travel by rail.”
