TRAIN OUT OF CONTROL
CRASH INTO STOP 200 SHEEP KILLED (Per Tress Association.) OHAKU.NE, this day. A special train of 27 trucks of sheep left Raetiti at 12.30 a.m. When between Kochfort ami Ohakune it was found that the engine was unable 1o draw the load, and the train was divided, when the engine took about 15 trucks on to Ohakune Junction, leaving the guard in charge of the remainder. The guard put on the brakes and went along the line, placing detonators to warn the engine driver when returning of iris approach to the trucks.
The trucks started off, gathering speed, and travelling at about seven miles an hour round several curves, over bridges, up inclines with a gradient of one. iir 50, and crashed into a stop block at the terminus of the line at the ond of the Ractilii station yard. A van and about nine loaded trucks went over the bank. The trucks were smashed and flic van damaged and buried in swamp up to the floor of tho van. About 200 sheep were killed and others injured. 'The sheep were bought at Freeman and Jackson’s owe fair, on Thursday. No one was hurt.
