WOMEN POLICE

FAVORED BY MINISTER The necessity for appointing women police, with the status and powers of policemen ill New Zealand was urged on Sir Thomas Sidey, Minister for Justlice, when he was'in Ohristehurch by representatives of several organisations. Airs. A. 12. Fruer represented the National Council of Women, Mrs. T. K. Taylor the women Justices of the Peace, anil Mrs. W. U. Roberts the Mothers' Union. '.the members of the deputation said that women police had been successful in other countries, where they were doing very good work. An opinion was held that'the women police with the same powers would be equally successful in New Zealand, where there was much need for them. The Ministe.ii said that personally he favored the proposal. Ho was convinced that women police would do much good work and would produce satisfactory restilts. To appoint them, however, a, change in the law was necessary. He would have to consult Cabinet before doing anything. He would be pleased to introduce a Rill authorising the appointment oli women police and make a change in the law if Cabinet approved.
