BOROUGH AFFAIRS
MEETING OF COUNCIL The Uishorue Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting 'last evening, the Mayor, Mr. D W. Xitoteman, presiding. There were also present: Crs. H. ii Maude, J. Blair, G. Bradley Smith, 8&; V. Beaufoy. and F. Collin. The chairman of' the Local Government Loans Board, in acknowledging re-, ceipt of draft voting papers for the water and sewerage loans for the recently merged areas of £58,250, and (or the waterworks loan of £73,000, intimated that one clause in the* papers, providing foi< the payment of the first year's interest out of loan moneys, would have to be amended in order to comply with the conditions imposed bv the board, namely, that no portion of interest or sinking ififtd should be paid out of loan moneys.—-The letter ijvas received. ~, the Chamber of Commerce wrote suggesting, that the council should appoint, one of its members as a member of the chamber.—The Mayor maintained that it was inadvisable for the council to be represented, pointing out that an individual councillor could not express lite opinions of the council, and it was ■decided that no action should be taken. A' petition was received from several ratepayers requesting that a street light should' he installed at the intersection of Wainni and Beach roads.—lt Wts '.reserved to advise petitioners that tire application would be considered when matters relating to street lighting generally are being reviewed shortly. Mr. R. B."Pearson.'appeared in support of an application liy Mrs. Jean McGavestnn to run a bus service between Gishome and Patutahi, and Mr. f,. T. Ikinmrd objected on behalf of Mr. E. Salt, the proprietor of a service at present plying between Patutahi and town, on various grounds, principally •that Mr. Salt's service was filling 1 all the requirements of the matter was discussed at length, and was referred to a committee to enahlo' further consideration to be given to .it, and (fending the receipt of further iiitbrmation. ' . REPORTS ENGLYEI-JK'B DEPARTMENT. The engineer, Mr. A. Young, reported, inter alia: — "Storm-water drainage loan; Ballanee street.—The laying of the Bullaoeo street stormwater drain is proceeding satisfactorily, and has been completed as far as Whitaker street.: Kaiti Esplanade.—AlL kerb and channel work ami all stormwater work hi j connection with this road have been completed, and everything is now ready for the hot-mix paving. Rutene road.'—The JSfnV storm ivutcr drain opposite the Kaiti tennis courts has been extended for a distance of 06ft. This will give iuo.ro space for parking ears on this frontage. "fStonuvvator drains: As the surface J Water drainage in the vicinity of Cruig road is iiot .satisfactory owing to the long detour of the existing open roadside drain, I propose to put in a direct outlet to Kaiti crock i across Wainui road am! through private property, Lot 28. The cost of Ac work, which includes 70ft. of '1 tin. diameter pipes and 155ft,' of ISin. diameter pipes fa estimated at £'2HK I request Council's approval of this drain. "Permanent Level Plans: Plans are sribmitted herewith showing the proposed permanent levels for the following streets: Ptirnu street, Ranfttrly road, Park road, mid Kaiti esplanade. • The above streets have already been formed to these levels. On approval by the council, nofiftcation By advertisenrunt will be given, anil these plans will be open for public
inspection in accordance with the Municipal Corporations Act.'' WORKS COMMITTEE The works committee reported, inter alia: — "Anzac street: This street was inspected, and it was found that it had been very badly cut up by excessive traflic caused through the carting of heavy plant tor the Tcxaco Oil (Jo's, bulk storage depot, and under sections 173/4 of the Public Works Act, and section 201 of the Municipal Corporations Act, the person by whose order or for whose benefit such heavy traffic was conducted is liable for the amount incurred in reinstating such roadway. The committee, therefore, empowered the engineer to expend not exceeding £2O in putting about two, chains of fbis street at the intersec-' tioii of Stanley road in order, provided a like amount was contributed by the Tcxaco Co. The portion of roadway between the footpath and the gravelling on the rOadway is also the responsibility of the .owner if he desires it to be metalled or shingled. "Bright street: This street requires surfacing- with bitumen, but funds are not ti,vailahle this year, and •it will have to stand over for consideration with the next estimates. "Camping site: It was agreed to allow a camper to erect a wharc at the extreme end of the Kaiti beach road 'at £"! per annum during the pleasure of the council, provided it was kept in good condition." The reports were adopted.
