SHOW GROUND APPEAL

ENCOURAGING SUPPORT Members of the Poverty Bay A. and P. Association are pursuing their active campaign in soliciting subscriptions so that the association will be able to avail itself of the offer of Mr. H. G. Tucker of £2500, providing £SOOO is raised for the purpose of preparing the .association's now grounds and erecting buildings on it. A» encouraging degree of support is reported, and so far the cash donations in the hands of the secretary, Mr. W. M. Bayly, total £473 2s. This represents the actual cash received, but in addition numbers of other donations have boon promised both in cash and in live stock,-some- of which were sold at the Matawhero yards last Friday. Further lots of stock are expected shortly in the Kaleyards. The following is a list of donors from whom cash has been received, in addition to-the list published recently:—

The C. and 1). Line steamer Port Hardy, which loaded a. shipment of Oisborne lamb for the London market in mid-December, arrived at London on February 10. Returns from her cargo will be awaited with interest. Two young Maoris, a girl, Wild Thomas, and a youth, Paumea McKay, appeared before Mr. P. H. Harper, S.M., in the Police Court; this* morning charged with breaches of the Licensing Act, McKay pleaded not guilty to a charge of supplying intoxicating liquor to a female _native, but admitted having aided and abetted some person unknown in the commission of Ihe offence of supplying liquor fo a native for consumption off licensed premises. The girl denied having aided and abetted McKay in committing the offence of supplying her with liquor. Constable Gatehouse stated' that n't 3.30 a.m. he found the two defendants and Whnre Carroll in Oh'ihlens road. The gild was sitting in a car with a bottle of whisky in her hand, the stopper of which had fallen down behind the scat. McKay said he had secured the whisky for a sick friend, and had kept half of it for himself; he denied' having , supplied liquor to wtvrroll. The girl was sober,' and .McKay also was sober, though he appeared to have had a drink or two. Carroll Was under the influence of liquor. To the magistrate, McKay said he had obtained I'lVo liquor for a sick friend, and had had nothing to do with the drinking of it. The girl had not. had a drink; the bottle 1 had beott in one of the side pockets of the car, and a.s it was spilling he asked her io hold it. Senior-Sergeant Wade remarked that the story about the girl might be true, as he had known of her in Wairoa, and she Was a wellbehaved girl. The magistrate said the' evidence was not strong enough to sustain Ihe charge against the girl, nor the lirst charge against McKay and they would' be dismissed.
