WAIKOHU COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL The Waikohu County Council met at To Karaka to-day, there being present: Ors A. A. Fraser, chairman, C. Gaukrodger, G. H. Morice, H. J. F. Tombleson, M. Doyle, and J. Hope. Leave oi absence was granted to Cr. IT. JI. Dons. Mr. T. Tyerman wrote stating that ho had collected £lO towards the cost or repairing the Motu Falls bridge.—lt was decided to ask Cr. Tyerman to forward the money to the Opotiki County Council, who had charge of tho bridge. Mr. E. F. Iveson, hon. secretary of the 382 pluone line, wrote saying that the subscribers on the northern end had decided to abandon it, and were prepared to sell their interests to the southern portion.—lt was decided to make an offer fo'r a half share, subject to the consent of the remaining subscribers. Mr. N. Green drew attention to the state of tho lower portion of the Malm rotu road.—The engineer stated that the road would bo attended to. Mr. T. Quirk advised that he had started carting timber from his To Worn, mill, and suggested that the Matawai road ho inspected and its present condition recorded. —It was decided that, tho chairman, Crs. Hope and Doyle and the engineer should visit the road on Tuesday, February 25, The hon. secretary of the Gisborne Chamber of Commerce wrote asking the council to take up membership of the chamber. —It was decided to apply for membership, and to appoint the chairman as the council’s representative. The chairman of the No. 4 District Highways Council advised that tho declaration of To Karaka-Kannknnaia road as a subsidiary main highway would be considered at the next annual review.— Received. The District Engineer, Gisborne, wrote stating that metalling proposals could not he entertained unless accompanied by a resolution of the council to maintain tho metalling efficiently.—lt was decided that all subsidised metalling should be efficiently maintained. Authority was received from the Public Works Department for tho expenditure of £6OO, £2 for £l, for metalling on the Matawa i - Han garoa road.—deceived. The Gislx>rne Borough Council forwarded a report of the conference which discussed Iho publication of a handbook for the district. —Received. Payments amounting to £5065 6s lid were authorised. Tho following tenders were opened:— Metalling Mokuretu road, Mr. 11. King, only tenderer, £266, accented. I Metalling Armstrong road, Mr. R. I King, only tenderer. £495. accepted. Making a drain on Pitcher road, three tenders, but none accepted, the matter j being left in abeyance until tho rate- ! payors interested had been interviewed. At the request of Cr. Morice, it was | decided to write to the Cook County i Council asking it to carry out the ngree!ment regarding the maintenance of Steele’s road. Ort tho motion of Cr. Doyle, the rates on To Karaka. recreation ground wero remitted.
