TURF CLUB ACCEPTANCES FIRST DAY’S FIELDS GOOD Acceptances for the first day, Thursday, of the Poverty Bay 'l'urf dub’s meeting at Mukaraka, closed last evening with the secretary, Mr. 1). It. deCosta, and the list of acceptors for the various events is reproduced below. RACING IN ENGLAND ASCOT GOLD CUP It will interest all who are looking forward to the racing career of 'Strephon II in England to know the conditions of the race for, the Ascot Gold Cup. It will Ire run on June 19 over 2U miles. The trophy is valued at £500,* and the added money is £3500, of which £7OO goes to the second horso and £3OO to the third. Three-year-old colts and fillies carry 7st. 7!bs., four-year-olds, 9st.; five years, six years, and aged, 9st. 41b. Mares are allowed 31b. Among the horses that with Strephon II will carry 9st. 41bs. are Fairway, regarded as the best horse in England, Athford—-Trigo’s, brother —Lawsuit, and Mont Clair. 'Thirteen horses are nominated from the Continent, including Palais Royal and Bubbles. Baron Oppenheim, who has engaged J. Munro for the season, is not represented, so possibly Mr. Sol Green may gyve the Australian jockey the mount on Strephon 11. If this horse starts in the Coronation Cup, 11, miles, at Epsom, on June 5, ho will carry 9st. 61bs.

DEATH OF POSEIDON

A one-time famous racehorse, Poseidon, winner of two Derbies and two classic cups, is dead; aged 27 years. Poseidon won nearly £20,000, mostly as a three-year-old in 190(5. His son Potent, which is the last of the thoroughbreds sired by him, won the Armidalo Cup last week.
