WATER POLO

THE GISBORNE TEAM FINAL SECTION TO-NIGIiT (Notes by “Leader”). The final selection of the water polo team to represent the Gisborne .’Amateur Surf and Swimming Club at the forthcoming .Hawke’s Bay provincial championships will he. made at the conclusion of to-night’s carnival. 'Hie competition is an annual fixture between the Gisborne and Heretaunga swimming clubs for the Ferguson Gup, which was won last season by the Gisborne representatives, who defeated the southerners by three goals to one. Both clubs have’had this contest in view -since the beginning of the season, and interest has increased with the approach of the 'match, which will be held in Napier on the evening ot Tuesday, February 18. The Gisborne Club has had two teams in training -for so no weeks, and under the expert -coaching of Dr. H. 1 Doubling Rice, the players have gained a considerable amount of sound knowledge concerning this strenuous aquatic sport. -Some of the swimmers have displayed remarkable ability in the water, and in recent mate'llcs 'evidence of their skill in handling the ball has been pronounced. Judging the players on their allround usefulness, “Leader” considers the following team capable of repeating last season’s success against the Heretaunga representatives: — S. Oorson T. Wauehop R. Pool M. Owen P. Murphy D. W. -McKeague J. Miller The only doubtful position in _ the team is that of right -forward, and of the two likely candidates for this place, J. 'Crawford and P. Murphy, the writer favors the latter. Murphy, who -hails from Tokomaru Bay, is noted for Ills fast, open play. He has initiative on attack, while his defensive tactics are sound. In addition to his capabilities as a swimmer and water polo player, Murphy travels all the way -from Tokomaru Bay to attend the carnivals here, and returns the same night. lie -is a good sport, gaining as much enjoyment from a race whether ho wins or loses. It is on. thp above-mentioned facts that the writer has placed Murphy before Crawford, who, on the other hand, has keen kept under constant observation by the selectors. Crawford lias given one or two pleasing exhibitions, but taking his play as & whole, it is not quite up to the standard of that shown by Murphy. The Gisborne lad lias a point in his favor, and that is his quickness ot ridding himself of the ball. The other six members -of the team are almost certain selections, though i;t is possible that a last-minute change may be made. GISBORNE SWIMMING CLUB The executive of the Gisborne Amateur Surf and Swimming Club met last evening, Mr. H. F. Forster presiding. There were also present Mrs. J. Rooney, Miss IL Robinson, and Messrs. C. E. Brown, I). W. McKeague, C. Greig, T. Wauehop, E. T. Ohrisp, R. Thompson, A. W. Mason, D. Miller, and O. F. Paltridge, lion, secretary. The resignation of Mr. Owen F. Paltridge, who has been the club’s secretary and hamlicapper for some years, was received with regret. Air. Paltridge is shortly leaving Gisborne, ami the club will lose one of its best workers; one who always has been willing to give his services for the benefit of the sport here and elsewhere. It was resolved that Mr. Paltridge’s resignation as secretary and handicapper be received with the deepest regret, and that his services over a long number of years bo recorded in the minutes. Mr, 1). Miller was appointed to fill the position of secretary. Mr. It. Burge was elected a member of the club,
