OBITUARY

EARL OF LATIIOM (Received February 8, 11 a.m.) LONDON, February 7. The death occurred to-day of the Earl of Latliom, aged 3b years. • The Daily Express says: “The Karl ol Lithom showed unbounded generosity. He lost large sums financing plays and altogether spent Ebb,(XX) on a theatre, yet ho never backed his own plays, saying he wanted recognition on their merits. He sold JLhe family seat in Lancashire for £2S,(XX) and died in a modest house in London.”

The late Earl of Lathom, Edward William Bootle-Wilbrahnrn, was the third holder of the title in the earldom which was created in 1880. He married in 1927. He was a late captain in the Lancashire Hussars Yeomanry. He wrote a number of plays under the name of Edward Wilbralmm. The heir to Wie barony is Arthur George BootleWilbrahnm, who was born in 1876.

The death occurred on February 1, fflter a very short illness, of Mr. Thomas Carswell, of Mangaiti, Auckland. He was born at Pukekohe in 1866, ami in the course of his farming operations resided at Napier, Gisborne, VVairoa, Motu and Mangaiti. Deceased was greatly esteemed as a settler of integrity and of industry, lie leaves a widow and one son.
