CHRISTCHURCH, this day. “There is too great a disparity between the Smithficld price of meat to the retail trade, and the price to the farmer on the hoof in New Zealand, and the farmers arc at last waking up to the fact that some explanation of this state of affairs is required,” said Mr. 11. Rcvcll, secretary of the Canterbury Freezing Works and Allied Trades Union, today, in discussing the reasons for the present short supply of stocks in South Island freezing works. Mr. Rcvcll said there was very little stock coming into the works just now, and as a result tho men were working very short time—less than half—time in most cases. In tho North Island, however, the works were very busy and one big firm had transferred a. number of its slaughtermen to the North Island to cope with the rush there. Few, if any, men had been put off, and the boards were about half full or a little, over. Mr. Re veil attributed the short supply of stock partly to the fact that stock was not ready and partly lo the fact that farmers were dissatisfied with the prices they obtained for the reasons which lie had given.
