RACING

GALLOPS AT THE PARK G.R.C. MEETING TO-MORROW With the stonn giving every appear- ' ance of having about blown itselt out, | the prospects of to-morrow’s racing at tile I'ark courfee, on the opening day ot . the Gisborne Racing Club’s summer meeting, were much improved to-day. 1 Une regrettable feature in connection with the storm is that three or four [Auckland horses, including the top- | weight in the Hack Gold Cup race, Rig Bertha, were on their way from the I north by sea when the weather broke. I However, apart from this group, there is a strong field for the Hack Cup. .which is hound to be looked upon as the principal event of the first day’s programme, and! the race should be well worth "seeing. The cup provided for this race is an extremely handsome one, and has attracted much attention, an additional degree of interest having been aroused among the jockeys and trainers by Mr. D. J. Barry's donation of miniature cups for the trainer and rider of the winning horse. 1 Course conditions should bo first-class tomorrow, and the fields generally are good, with fair quality represented. Te Hapara Hack Handicap has 16 accepi tors, the Maiden Scurry a similar num- ■ her, tho Hack Cup race 13, tho Bark [ Hack Handicap 12, and the Highweight ! Handicap 11, while the Flying and Car- , roll Memorial handicaps have rcspec- ; lively seven and six. Some of the i horses engaged have overlapping engagements, which are bound to lead to scratching.?, but even with the average number of defections, the fields will be good enough and there should be second dividends in all but one of tho events on the card. Many of the horses trained in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay have had ; recent outings, especially at the Wairoa ! meeting, and their performances should • provide some guide for investors on the , machine, but several others will be pre- , sent to complicate the calculations.
