SWIMMING AT TOKOMARU
HAUTONOA CLUB CARNIVAL GISBORNEITE’S SUCCESS (Special to tho Herald.) TpKOMARIJ. BAY, this day. Though, tho weather looked threatening during the morning and some rain fell, the success of the Hautonoa Library, Sports, and Entertainment Club’s annual swimming carnival yesterday was not greatly affected, as the rain cleared off before one o ’clock and it was found possible to carry out the programme very satisfactorily. The attendance was fair, and interest was evinced in the presence of Miss K. Millar, New Zealand lady chaiiipion middle-distance swimmer, who took part in several of tho events. Among tho other competitors were D. W. AleKeague and D. Miller, of Gisborne, the first-mentioned gaining the principal awards after some close tpssles with the local swimmers. Miss Millar gave an interesting exhibition of various strokes, and D. Miller demonstrated various fancy dives, each being accorded warm applause. The carnival, which was the seventh of the annual series, was hold alongside the wharf at Tokomaru Bay, Mr. F. E. Porter, chairman of the committee, and Mr. H. Roberts, hon. secretary, did much to promote the success of the function, and the various officials appointed for tho carnival carried out their duties in a highly capable manner. Mr. J. Corbett was the handicapper, and Air. I. Lowe starter; Air. F. McWilliams fulfilled the duties of time-keeper, and the various announcements were made by Air. Alfred Adams. The numerous close finishes were adjudicated upon to tho general satisfaction by the judges, among .whom Messrs. Porter and J. H. Carver were prominent. At the close of the programme of races and other competitions, the chairman presented the trophies, some of which were of considerable value, and he took tho opportunity to thank Aliss K.
