PEACE SHIELD TOURNEY FIRST DAY’S SECTION PLAY Keen interest was shown yesterday in the first clay’s section play in tho annual competition tor the Peace {Shield, one ol tlie principal trophies held by tho (Jisborne howling Centre. The sections were played on the Kaliutia and Poverty hay greens, there being only two sections. I lie As were at ivaliutia and the 1! s at Poverty Lay; the sections changed over to-day, while the post-section play will take place tomorrow ou the 'Gisborne club’s greens. 'i'iie entries comprised six links each from Gisborne, Poverty Lay, ■ and Kaliutia chibs, and one each from Tolaga Lay and Te Jvaraka. Though the trophy is lor open competition, there were no entries this year from outside the centre’s district, but although i visitors would have received a warm welcome, their presence could hardly have added to the interest of the tournament, which was kept at a high pitch yesterday. Kadi rink'played three games, and only three of the 20 rinks finished the day without suffering defeat, these successful competitors comprising J. Newton’s rink in the A section, and Sinclair’s and Morse’s in tho L section. To-day's play may well level matters up; but a good start is as important in a bowling tournament as in any other form of competition, and the rinks mentioned deserve congratulation. J. Newton skipped the rink entered under J. J. Martin’s leadership, Mr. Martin having had to withdraw through indisposition. The greens were in very good order; and tho rain which fell lightly during the morning did not affect the play to any noticeable degree. The tournament was inaugurated by Messrs. W. J. MacGibbon and J. S. Allan at Poverty Lay and Kaliutia clubs respectively, the centre representatives wishing all bowlers the compliments of the season 1 and good keen bowling during the course of the competition. Results of the first day’s section play were as under:—
