THE GRAND NATIONAL

LONDON, Nov. 19. Drastic changes are shortly to be made in tho conditions governing the entry ot horses for the 'Grand National. The Grand National, which is run at Liverpool in the March of each year, is probably the most famous steeplechase in tho world, and the winning of it is certainly one of tho must coveted honors of the British turf. Its importance is reflected in its value, whi'jh was almost. £13,000 last race, or nearly UIOOO more than tho Derby itself. Hitherto the race lias been open to all-comers, and the result is that the /fields of the last few years have been absurdly large. This year no fewer than 66 horses wero started, of which only nino finished; On this, as on past occasions, many of the best horses were brought down and had their chances destroyed by other horses who were obviously unfit to attempt a course so difficult as that over which the Grand National is run. To prevent the race being thus marred in the future, entry for it is now to be restricted to horses which have won a place in certain 'classes of races, in this wav the capacity of tho horses will be assured and the race will lio relieved of the impossible candidatures which have recently been clogging it
