FIVE KILLED IN BLAST

SAFETY VALVE DID NOT ACT WASHINGTON, Nov. 22. Five persons were dead to-day and more than 30 others injured, three critically, its a result, of the boiler explosion which wrecked the front, of a J. C. McCrory Jive-aiul-ten-cent store here yesterday. The blast, coining at the height of the afternoon shopping period, hurled men and women in all directions, and carried many to the basement of the store when the sidewalk in front of the building collapsed. An investigation by the district building inspector’s office showed the explosion was caused by failure of a safety valve to function. Rescue squads, police, firemen and soldiers joined in searching the wreckage for victims, and it was nearly two hours before they were sure the last person had been removed.
