THE EMDEN INCIDENT
OFFICIAL EXPLANATION .RECEIVED WITH SCEPTICISM (Received Dee. 31. 3 p.m.) BERLIN, Dec 30. The publication of the Emden mutiny story is responsible for :i .somewhat tardy official statement by the Defence Minisfry. Professing to give the facts, it sets out to state that when the, cruiser anchored off Puerto Colombia on October 13 some of the crew went ashore, drank too much tropical ibeer, became hilarious, sang the Internationale, and hoisted a red handkerchief. When the ship reached Willielmshafcn three of the crew were arrested and eourtmarlialled. It was decided, however, that the offence did not cons! it lite mutiny, and the punishment was light. 'The Daily Telegraph's Berlin correspondent, in recording the explanation, adds that the Defence Ministry's e\ plaualion is embarrassing, facts are so often misleading that this one hardly reassures the public mind. Indeed, se sponsible newspapers declare that even the official version indicates a most unsatisfactory slate of discipline aboard the bearer of the proud name JEmden.
