An ancient generator and battery on an old motor car saved the Jives of eight passengers and 2(i of the crow of the steamer Santa Anna, which finally reached, port towed behind tho Atliol Chief, after a hair-rawing struggle with the waves, which opened scants and sent the sea water above llicengine room floor. The pumps were started on Decon* ber 17. After three ds.ys' battering all the steam available was turned into pumping, but the water gradually gained as the ship wallowed through the sea. The radio generator refused to work, and the ship's company %vas faced with foundering. Someone then thought of an old time "flivver" stored below. The car was stripped of its battery and spark coil, and within half an hour their S.O.S. was answered by tnc steamer Atliol Chief, which towed them, to port.
