There was a dramatic incident in tho Chamber of Deputies when Deputy Reibal read a document signed by Marshal Foch which strongly opposed the evacuation of the Rhineland before the treaty date. The document, which was dated October, 1926, said Germany was daily becajfiing stronger, and desired revenge.’ Withdrawal from the Rhineland would place France in an exceptionally grave position. M. Briand, in reply, admitted his ignorance of the document, although, as Minister of the Interior, he was Marshal Foch’s chief, and worked with him four days of the week. He added that lie did not know how his colleague came into possession of the document, but it was a sorry state of affairs. Deputy Reibal remarked: “T simply did mv duty,” and the incident closed.
