MR. RICHARD BROPHY
NOT DISMISSED BY BYRD (Per Press Association.) DUNEDIN 1 , this day. Relative to the cable message about Mr.. Richard Brophy, formerly second in command of the Byrd expedition, Messrs. Tapley and. Co., the base agents for tho expedition, state that there is no truth in the assertion that an intrigue with a Broadway actress caused his dismissal. Mr. Brophy was not dismissed; lie suffered a severe breakdown in Dunedin and during the period lie was incapacitated lie was unfit fo handle the expedition’s affairs, so that his resignation was accepted. There was no question oi ; misdemeanour, only unnecessary expenditure arising from Mr. Brophy’s illness. Commander Byrd was and is much concerned over Mr. Bvophy’s welfare and future. In the early stages of the expedition, Mr. Brophy proved an efficient organiser, rendering inestimable service.
