PROGRESS OF TRIALS The steps which have been taken to establish the tung oil plant in New Zealand lire promising, according to officers of the Horticultural Department. Over 2000 plants were reared at- the Te Kauwlmta horticultural station, and these were distributed Hist year to municipalities and others interested in various parts ol the North Island where the climate was % considered suitable. In most cases the plants are reported to be making headway. Those at Te Kauwhata have done particularly well, some having reached a height of four to five feet in the first- year. In China the plants reach the fruit-bearing stage, at five years. The oil produced from the nuts of tile tung tree is oxceaedinglv valuable, and is used particularly for ’the manufacture of high-grade varnish required in motor-car work. Although the oil product is very valuable, the industry is conducted in a v’ery primitive way in China, and the trees are not cultivated. Europeans and Americans, however. are taking up the industry there, and modern plant : has been installed for dealing with the nuts and extracting the oil. Even the shell of the tung nut lias a market. .
