PHONE CABLE ACROSS ATLANTIC

LONDON, Sept. 26. Preparations are now being made for the laving of the first trans-Atlantic telephone cable. The purchase of land in the west of Ireland for the Irish terminal station has been completed by tiio American Telephone and Telegraph Co. The cable will lie bd far the longest submarine cable in existence. It will be laid between Newfoundland and A chill Head in County Mayo. Hitherto there have been difficulties in tho way of groat lengths of cable for telephony which had to he overcome by the use of intermediate relay stations. This difficulty has now been overcome by the use of a, new senes of alloys. The work of laying the cable and completing tho land connections will, it is hoped, he completed by the end of! 1932.
