A BALL OF FIRE
EXPLODES ON NAPIER HOME A narrow escape from what might ha.ve proved very serious injury was experienced by Mr. Campbell, 64 Chaucer road north, Napier, during the storm on Saturday afternoon. Mr. Campbell had been Standing on fho porch of the house with a child in his arms, and had just passed through the hall into a room when a tremendous explosion shook thef building and a cloud of sulphurous fumes and smoke filled the house. This was not caused by lightning, but rather by a ball of fire, which struck the end of the porch with terrific force, smashing the heavy timber supports to matchwood and shattering the larijaj panes of glass on two sides of the porch to a million fragments. The ball of lire was seen by several residents, but the moment it struck the solid substance of tint porch it burst with ear-splitting force and the p(pit-up gases formed a cloud which blew’ through the house. I It was indeed fortunate that Mr. j Campbell left the porch when he did, ' or more serious results would have un-1 doubtedly accompanied this startling oc- ! currence.—Telegraph.
