ABRAHAM’S BURIAL PLACE
REPORT OF STRANGE CRIES THE SUPERSTITIOUS ARABS LONDON, September 26. The special correspondent of the Daily Chronicle at Jerusalem reports a curious story from Hebron, where the worst | pogrom took place. It is said that night after night Arabs, who *go to pray in the great mosque there declare that they hear cries coming from what they hold to be the tomb of Abraham. “Why have ve slaughtered my children?” “Ye sons of Ishmael, why have ye dishonored tliy father’s name?” These and similar cries are followed by wailings, which grow clearer as night draws on. Women are said to bear a woman's voice saying. ‘’Why cud vo shed innocent blood? Why had ye no pity?” The superstitious Arabs are greatly troubled by reports that these voices are beard from the famous cave of Maehpelah, over which the mosque stands. The French authorities in Syria are taking extraordinary precautions to keep nationals of Palestine out of that country. Indeed, the frontier between the two mandated territories may he said to be hermetically sealed. It is guarded by strong forces of while French troops and Senegalese. s
Visas for Syria are invariably refused hv the French Consular authorities to Palestinians. No exception is made in cases of eminent personages, such as the Grand Mufti and the Mayor of Jerusalem, who asked the other day for permission to pay a visit to Damascus.
