BEAUTY CONTESTS
PROHIBITION ADVOCATED BRISBANE, Ofctobcr 15. The elimination of beauty contests will receive the serious consideration of the Home Secretary, following requests by the National Council of Women and the Queensland Council of Churches that legislation should be introduced to prohibit them. The National Council took action in connection with the mysterious death of Duicie Barclay, “.Miss Queensland,” winner of a beauty competition. It entirely supported the Minister’s opinion that the winning of a beauty competition was a contributing factor in this case. It, therefore, decided to ask (he Home Secretary to introduce legislation to prevent beauty competitions, as it was considered that the commercialising of beauty in such -cases had a. demoralising effect upon the competitors and Hie community generally. The council added that it felt sure, judging from the Attorney-General’s sympathetic attitude regarding this matter, that he would do. his host to persuade his Government to take early action.
